11:00 am
COFEPOW members and friends are invited to attend a wreath-laying service to mark the 84th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Exeter.
The service will take place at 11.00 am on Saturday 28 February 2026 at the HMS Exeter Memorial Window, located in the North Chapel of Exeter Cathedral.
The memorial window is dedicated to those who did not return home. In recent years, the commemoration has also come to include those who did return, but who suffered as a result of their service and have since passed away.
After the Service
The Exeter White Ensign Club remains closed. As in previous years, it is proposed that those attending meet informally afterwards for lunch and conversation at The White Hart, a pub and hotel located directly opposite the former club. Further details, including menu options, will be shared closer to the date.
A small number of attendees will be staying at The White Hart, which has offered favourable rates. Anyone wishing to book accommodation may do so via Marston’s Central Reservations on 01902 916907 or by email at centralreservations@marstons.co.uk. When booking, please mention HMS Exeter, as this may help secure a better rate.
The Service
The format of the service will be similar to previous occasions, with only minor adjustments anticipated. Anyone who would like to take part in a reading during the service is invited to make contact in advance.
HMS Exeter Model – Exeter Guildhall
The model of HMS Exeter has now returned from the Exeter White Ensign Club to Exeter Guildhall, where it is displayed prominently and cared for regularly. The Guildhall will be open from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon for the Lord Mayor’s Coffee Morning, providing an opportunity to view the model in its new setting. The Lord Mayor is expected to attend the Cathedral service.
Live Streaming
Exeter Cathedral intends to live-stream the service via its YouTube channel, enabling friends and family overseas to watch. This will be particularly helpful for those in eastern regions such as Australia, and in western regions including the USA and Canada.
Attendance
To assist the Cathedral with health and safety arrangements, those planning to attend the service are kindly asked to indicate their intention to do so in advance.
We look forward to welcoming members and supporters as we come together to remember HMS Exeter and all those connected with her service.
