The museum has invited COFEPOW to organise a private party to visit the museum on 25 August. If sufficient numbers attend, an informal service will be held and COFEPOW guests would have the opportunity to lay white orchids on the ‘Singapore’. Included would be a ride along the track in a boxcar pulled by a selected engine from the museum. The cost which would include tea and biscuits, would be £10 per head.
In order to gauge what the likely take-up would be, National Event Co-ordinator, Chris Wills, is asking members who would be interested to contact her directly on 0121 244 7263 or by email at email@example.com.
The museum offers a super day-out for mining and railway enthusiasts and those interested in the history of the ‘Singapore’ loco. As the repatriation of allied POWs began in September 1945, it wasn’t until 1953 that a fellow ‘POW’, this dockside steam locomotive, returned to the UK, landing at Portsmouth Naval Base. It was taken to the Royal Navy base at Chatham to continue its military service, until sold for preservation in 1972.
