VJ Day 80th anniversary activities

Southampton will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a programme of commemorative events on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 August 2025. The anniversary marks the end of the Second World War and recognises Southampton’s role in welcoming home troops and civilians returning from the Far East.

Friday 15 August

9am: Flag-raising ceremony and proclamation outside the Civic Centre.

10.30am: Wreath laying at the Repatriation Memorial, Town Quay Park.

11am: Guided walking tour with See Southampton, starting in Bugle Street and finishing at the Far East Prisoners of War plaque in Town Quay Park.

At lunchtime, invited guests will board Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 for a commemorative lunch hosted by the Lord Mayor. Guests include a veteran and relatives of those who served in the Far East.

8.30pm: Beacon lighting at Holyrood Church, with live music from the Spitfire Sisters and an address by the Lord Mayor. The beacon will be lit around 9pm. Free entry, all welcome.

Evening: The O2 Guildhall will be illuminated in red, white and blue.

A Lancaster bomber flypast is also being explored—details to follow.

Saturday 16 August

Southampton City Council is supporting the Royal British Legion with a day of community commemorations, including a service and free picnic with live music and heritage displays.

SeaCity Museum will also host a free display on Southampton’s role in the Second World War, featuring wartime photographs, objects and a matchstick model of the Queen Mary.
