Pte. Ernie Boswell enlisted in the Winnipeg Grenadiers Canadian Active Service Force on 06 September 1939 in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. The Regiment served on garrison duty in Jamaica BWI May 1940 till October 1941.
Along with the Royal Rifles of Canada, the Winnipeg Grenadiers sailed from Vancouver BC Canada aboard the SS Awatea for Hong Kong where they disembarked 16 Nov 41. Ernie Boswell was taken POW on Christmas Day 25 Dec 41 and spent his last years in Shamshuipo POW camp Hong Kong until he died of malnutrition on the 29th Nov 1943.
He is buried in the Sai Wan War Cemetery Hong Kong
I had the honour of being the first family member to visit his grave on the 22nd July 2001 while on exchange in Hong Kong with the Canadian Forces Reserve (CIC).
